You are warmly welcome to 47th Workshop on Compound Semiconductor Devices and Integrated Circuits held in Europe and 18th Expert Evaluation and Control of Compound Semiconductor Materials and Technologies (WOCSDICE-EXMATEC 2024). This edition will be held in the city of Heraklion, in Crete, Greece.

WOCSDICE is an annual workshop with a long-standing tradition, as it was established in 1973. This meeting brings together internationally recognized scientists, as well as promising early career researchers and engineers to disseminate state-of-the-art research findings in the areas of compound semiconductor materials, associated devices and integrated circuits. Last WOCSDICE editions were organized in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria – Canary Islands , Spain (2017), Bucharest, Romania (2018), Cabourg, France (2019), Bristol, United Kingdom (2021, virtual event), Ponta Delgada-Azores Islands, Portugal (2022) and Palermo-Sicily, Italy (2023).

EXMATEC has been based on biennial meetings since 1992. The meeting sets itself apart by the presence of multidisciplinary well-known distinguished experts, young and talented researchers and business delegates from all over the world to present and exchange cutting-edge ideas and technologies in the fields of material fabrication, characterization and processing of compound semiconductors. Last EXMATEC meetings took place in Delphi, Greece (2014), Aveiro, Portugal (2016), Bucharest, Romania (2018), Bristol, United Kingdom (2021, virtual event), Ponta Delgada–Azores Islands, Portugal (2022) and Palermo-Sicily, Italy (2023).

While in the past WOCSDICE and EXMATEC were two separate workshops, since 2014 and for three editions, EXMATEC started to be organized jointly with WOCSDICE every two years. This successful format resulted in 2021 in the merge of the two events in a unique annual WOCSDICE-EXMATEC conference. This format will be adopted also in Heraklion for WOCSDICE-EXMATEC 2024. However, it is the wish of the Steering Committees and of the local organizers to maintain the traditional scientific features of each workshop, while favoring intensive and informal interactions between young researchers and experts in the field belonging to these complementary communities.

Welcome to Heraklion

Heraklion is the capital of Crete and one of the Mediterranean region's most fascinating and vibrant cities. It is full of places to discover. With the current efforts to open up the wonderful mediaeval city centre, it speaks to us of a past full of history and great events that reflect its location at the crossroads of three continents.

The city is also the commercial and technological center of the island. It has a strategic geopolitical position in the south-eastern Mediterranean Sea connecting three continents and many different cultures.

It offers a wealth of museums, a summer-long arts festival, historical sightseeing, amazing nightlife and events throughout the year. Whatever the purpose of your visit, your stay in Heraklion will be one to remember.

NanoElectronics in Crete

Microelectronics Research Group - IESL/FORTH & University of Crete

The Microelectronics Research Group (MRG) was established in 1986 and conducts research in the fields of nanoelectronics and nanophotonics, mainly focused on the semiconductor material families of III-Vs, SiC, CNT and two-dimensional (2D) material systems. Its mission is the development of innovative nanostructured materials and fabrication processes leading to new scientific knowledge and know-how on semiconductor materials, devices and systems technologies. Its research addresses the key enabling technologies (KETs) of micro/nanoelectronics and photonics, advanced materials, the domains of information & communication technologies (ICT), quantum technologies, defence and space as well as the societal challenges of energy, safety, security, transport and health & well-being.
